And We’re Off! London Chapter of New Research Speakers Club

Betty Adamou, chapter, inaugural, London

From one call of drastic change that is Brexit, to a small group of people who are trying to implement their own somewhat drastic but positive change; I am writing this on Friday morning about how the New Research Speakers Club went last night in this this blog post almost seems unimportant with what is going on today.

But I think not. Let’s re-look at the philosophy behind the New Research Speakers Club; that there is a call for diversity and equality on the research stage, and that those who are deemed as ‘leaders’ in our industry, help raise those up the ladder who are not there (yet). The philosophy for the club is indeed, that we are ‘better together’.

So how did the London Chapter go last night? Really great and better than expected!

Many delegates were not able to make it for two main reasons; wanted to do their civic duty and vote so largely did that after working hours, and the nearest station to the venue had issues with flooding due to a huge amount of rainfall (this is England, so no surprises there!).

But we did have 7 people attend, and all from very different backgrounds, and involved in MR in vastly different ways. What I loved about this group was that it was, in itself, diverse; people who were born in other countries, equal in gender split, and a range of ages. This just goes to show that if you are lookingto balance the scales on the research stage, it is so easy to do so.

So what did we do?

Head on over to Betty’s blog to read the rest of the story!

Toronto, May 6, 2016
A new forum to grow the speaker talent in the marketing research industry has launched in Toronto, London, and Chennai. The New Research Speakers Club, founded by Annie Pettit, PhD, will give researchers, statisticians, data scientists, data visualization experts, and other people from related professions a forum to develop their speaking skills in order to meet the growing demand for fresh and skilled speakers in the industry. This club is aimed at helping those who have limited speaking experience, and those who have never spoken at a major conference before.

Annie Pettit, the Founder and Chair of the Toronto chapter, said, “Our industry has many great speakers but few places for people who are starting out to practice their speaking skills before getting onto a bigger stage. This club is a warm and friendly place for researchers to learn from each other and develop their speaking skills without the fear of a formal venue.”

The London, UK chapter is chaired by Betty Adamou, Founder of Research Through Gaming and sought after speaker at major research and gaming conferences around the world. The Chennai, India chapter is chaired by Pravin Shekar, President of KREA and a thoroughly engaging speaker who has led various industry committees for groups such as ESOMAR and MRSI.

Chapters meet regularly for about one hour every two to three months, and offer attendees the opportunity to speak about a research topic of their choice. The zero pressure format will allow attendees to be listeners or speakers, as well as give speakers the opportunity to practice upcoming presentations or simply talk about a research topic that interests them in front of a group of like-minded individuals. Annie, Pravin and Betty will provide public or private constructive feedback to those who opt to receive it.

The inaugural meeting will be held on June 23rd, at 6pm, local time at all three chapters. More information about the club can be found on the website, http://NewRST.wordpress.com.
