IIeX Conference

Now a regular session at IIeX EU, I’m delighted to introduce you to the speakers taking part in the New Speaker Track!  These folks have never spoken at a conference before so let’s give them a hearty hello and welcome!

Today we meet Holly Collins, an integrated researcher at Trinity McQueen. Find Holly on LinkedIn.

  • Why have you never spoken at a conference before? It’s not something I considered I had the authority to do. I had it in my head that everyone who was speaking at a conference had probably already spoken at a conference before, or had been published multiple times – I just hadn’t really considered myself to be able to, honestly.
  • Why did you decide to speak at IIeX Europe? When I found out about the New Speaker opportunity, I immediately thought of a topic I wanted to talk about. I decided to apply after about 10 minutes of mulling it over, with one side of my brain telling me I wasn’t experienced enough, and the other side already constructing what I was going to say. Thankfully the optimist won! I realised I’d been thinking ‘why me?’, whereas this opportunity made me realise I should be saying ‘why not?’.
  • What is your advice to people who have never spoken at an event before?
If you have something you are truly passionate about communicating to people, just go for it. Every time I have a doubt or a sliver of nervousness, my idea carries me through, because I’m so excited to talk about it. That’s the main advice I’d give, I would be to find something to be excited about and run with it. Also practice, and start in advance, not a week before you’re due to speak!
  • What are you looking forward to the most about IIeX Europe?
I really hope that my talk will inspire people to think about how they use video in a new way, so I’m hoping to have some good conversations with people about that. I’m also looking forward to seeing a mix of new speakers and experienced conference speakers, as well as exploring some of Amsterdam in my free time if I can!
  • What do you hope to learn from this event? I love coming away from events having learnt something that I didn’t know I wanted to learn about. That’s one of my favourite feelings, when someone can illuminate a way of thinking that you didn’t even know existed before, so that’s what I’m hoping for. In terms of my own performance, I want to experience how I’ll fare under a different sort of pressure, so I can improve for the next time.

5 Ways to Make Video Work for Insight and the Pitfalls to Avoid
Mon Feb 18 – 4:40 PM – 5:00 PM ( 20 min )

We don’t need to be a Spielberg to tell great stories. This presentation will cover the most common, obvious and avoidable issues we can face when using film for insight, as well as ways you can win right now.

For researchers, there’s a lot of ways we can really make video work for insight, and even more ways we’ll be able to use it in the future. But with video, it’s definitely a case of walk before you run – and think before you shoot in 4k!

Holly will talk about 5 ways that you can apply right now to all of your creative outputs to make them work harder for you, with a video focus at the heart of it all.
